the studio

Whatever you want to learn, lessons at New Road Music Studios will be adapted to your individual needs and objectives.

There are two strands central to NRMS teaching - building good technique and a solid foundation - alongside the encouragement and development of your unique
musicality and creativity.

As your musical progress depends on regular practice, we will work together to develop good habits and an personal strategy.

Students of all levels are welcome - from beginners to professional and post-graduate musicians, and in any musical genre. If you are interested in pursuing a future in music, I have a proven record of preparing students for further professional study at conservatoire, university and performance school.

dr trevor siemens

Trevor is a composer, singer, and conductor with more than twenty-five years teaching experience. He is passionate about creating opportunities for students—regardless of age or experience—to develop skills and engage with music, to inspire them to develop as musicians and as individuals. Trevor was awarded a PhD in Composition from the University of Bristol after completing his Masters at Manchester and studying composition and performance (opera studies) at McGill University in Montréal.

He also holds QTS (qualified teacher status), and has been the Director of Music and Department Head at both sixth form college and high school levels. He has taught undergraduate composition and orchestration at university, and spent eight years as a tutor on the Opera Studies BA (Hons) programme at London’s Rose Bruford College.

voice

voice

I teach beginner to advanced students across a wide range of musical genres. Whether you want to sing for your own enjoyment, prepare for an audition, or work through graded exams, I will help you find your voice

Classically trained, I have performed in both operas and musicals, and have been a professional choral singer. As a musical director and conductor, I have worked with singers to prepare roles in musicals such as West Side Story and Sweeney Todd, as well as operas from the Baroque to the Twentieth century - Purcell to Ravel. But good technique and musicality are important and effective across genres - and work with my students singing jazz, rock and pop.

Graded exams offered:

ABRSM & Trinity College London - grades 1 to 8

and professional qualifications (Diploma level)

in Singing, Singing for Musical Theatre, or Rock & Pop Vocals.

composition

composition

Lessons in composition are tailored to your interests and objectives; supporting and unlocking your creativity, while providing a ‘toolkit’ to help you realise your ideas.

You might be a beginner, wanting to explore how to shape sound, to a postgraduate composer looking to work through some new ideas.

Composition lesson can cover a variety of areas from melody writing to advanced orchestration, analysis and style studies to electronic composition.

If you're interested in contemporary music, I also offer lessons in songwriting and arranging.

piano

I teach beginner to intermediate piano students of all ages. As with voice lessons, you will be encouraged to develop good technique alongside exploring musicality and creativity on the instrument.

And piano lessons don't have to be about grade exam (although I offer them). You might have a specific classical piece that you've always wanted to play, or you might want to learn how to play the chords along with your favourite song - I can help you achieve it.

Graded exams offered:

ABRSM & Trinity College London - grades 1 to 5

I also have extensive experience teaching A-level and GCSE music, from all four exam boards (Edexcel, AQA, OCR and Eduqas) with great success. Lessons can be customised to help you prepare for any or all of the three aspects of the qualification - in composition, performance or the understanding/listening/analysis section.
